Oh, clap your hands, all you peoples! Shout to God with the voice of triumph! For the LORD Most High is awesome, He is a great King over all the earth. He will subdue the peoples under us, and the nations under our feet. He will choose our inheritance for us, the excellence of Jacob whom He loves. Selah
It is thrilling and amazing to watch the sheer joy, glory, and national pride seen on the faces of Olympic athletes when they win a gold medal competition. It is easy to understand why the Apostle Paul adopted a racing metaphor to describe our spiritual quest (1 Corinthians 9:24). The psalmist here joins this chorus as he cheers the awesome LORD Most High with applause and shouts of triumph.
Several of the athletes in the current Olympic Games received great rewards for their medal performances. Some were even given houses by their governments in recognition of their achievements. All of this is just a small taste of the incomparable glory God has reserved as an inheritance for His people. The very word "inheritance" is precious, for it speaks of wealth and status passed from parents to children—not as the result of the children's planning or hard work—but based on the loving relationship existing between them. In this case, it summarizes the status and rewards derived from the loving relationship between God and His people. He Himself is described elsewhere in Scripture as our inheritance, and we as His inheritance. The celebration is going to be unspeakably glorious. That is truly something to shout about!
Best wishes, GH
