Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in His holy mountain. Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth, is Mount Zion on the sides of the north, the city of the great King, God is in her palaces; He is known as her refuge. For this is God, our God forever and ever; He will be our guide even to death.
Some Gentiles wonder what the significance of Jerusalem may be that it has for centuries been the focus of contention. Aside from the breathtaking beauty of this city nestled atop the mountains of Judea, its perfect climate, its strategic location at the confluence of continents, and its unrivaled history, Jerusalem is the city of God chosen by Him to be the site of His holy temple. It is a place where the glory of God descended in palpable form, and a place where these very psalms were first written and sung. Many prophets, priests, and kings lived and died in this place, and this is where Jesus performed miracles and proclaimed His message, "Come unto Me all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." It is the city of the great King.
The Bible tells us that this great King will one day return and establish an everlasting kingdom with its capitol in Jerusalem, and mention is made in the Bible about the coming new Jerusalem. So the best days of Jerusalem are yet to come. For the present we are enjoined to pray for the peace of Jerusalem in Psalm 122, where there is also a prayer for the prosperity of those who love this place.
Best wishes, GH
